Target REDcard: Take Charge of Education

By: Katie Pederson

For many years at Red Rock Central, seniors have had to raise money to help pay for their senior dues, caps, gowns, tassels, diplomas, and anything else they need to graduate in the spring. Some of the fundraising activities seniors do are selling frozen food, cookie dough, and magazines, and they working at the concession stands during sports events.  On top of all of the fundraisers,  Target has given them an even bigger incentive. Without many people’s knowledge, Target has been assisting seniors at RRC in fundraising by giving them one percent of every purchase when it is designated to the school.

With a Target REDcard and the purchase of anything at a Target store, customers can designate one percent of a one dollar purchase to go to the school of their choice. This year, Red Rock High School has received $928.77, and the elementary school received $490.30.The money for the high school is going to pay for all of the senior class’s caps and gowns for this year. The money for the elementary will go to the student council account. That is a whopping $1419.07 for the Red Rock school district alone! There are no limits to the amount of money a school can receive.

To purchase a Target REDcard, all a customer has to do is go to Target and buy one. Once they have that card and make a purchase, they just let the cashier know that they would like to designate that one percent to the school of the customer’s choice. During the month of September, checks are made out and mailed to the school and sent to the attention of the principal. Amounts under $25 will carry over to the next payout.

Receiving money from the Target REDcard is a great way to help the school out. Red Rock Central is hopeful that this system will be just as successful in the future. The senior class is so grateful that our school is a part of the Take Charge of Education campaign.
